I was seven when I learned that questions could be inconvenient.
We were studying fractions. I raised my hand and asked why we couldn’t just use decimals for everything, wouldn’t that be simpler?
The teacher paused, smiled tightly, and said,
“That’s not what we’re learning today.”
I didn’t ask again.
The lesson I absorbed wasn’t about fractions.
It was about curiosity.
It disrupts.
It slows things down.
It should be contained.
No one told me that explicitly.
But the code was written anyway.
Last week, I shared how AI revealed a belief I’d been running on for decades: that my worth depended on constant productivity.
But this week, a different question stayed with me.
Where did that belief come from?
Not from AI.
Not from any one job, manager, or deadline.
It came from education.
From a system that trained me to optimise outputs long before it taught me to understand myself.
And that led me to wonder:
If AI is now holding up a mirror to our operating systems,
what does that mirror reveal about how we educate?
1. Education as the Original Operating System
Long before algorithms shape our attention, classrooms shape our inner code.
School teaches us far more than subjects. It teaches us, quietly:
what gets rewarded
what gets ignored
what counts as success
what failure says about us
Most of us absorbed these rules without ever being told them explicitly.
A hand raised with a question that “wasn’t on the syllabus.”
A test score that mattered more than understanding.
Praise for speed, silence around struggle.
The lesson wasn’t just academic. It was relational.
Curiosity has limits.
Mistakes are risky.
Your value is measurable.
This isn’t about blame.
It’s about recognising conditioning.
Because when powerful tools arrive later in life, they don’t question that conditioning.
They amplify it.
2. What Are We Educating For?
Most education systems still answer this implicitly:
productivity
employability
compliance with standards
performance under pressure
These priorities made sense in an industrial economy.
But in an AI-accelerated world, they’re not just incomplete.
They’re destabilising.
Because they optimise for external performance without building internal capacity.
They teach students what to do, but not how to be when:
Answers are abundant
Speed is effortless
Comparison is constant
Pressure has no natural ceiling
When tools remove friction, the only thing left regulating behaviour is the human nervous system.
And that’s something most of us were never taught to understand.
3. Signals of Another Way
There are already education systems, past and present, quietly operating on different assumptions.
Not as perfect models, but as signals.
Finland’s education system, for example, places deep trust in teachers, limits standardised testing, and prioritises wellbeing alongside learning. Students experience less anxiety, more curiosity, and greater resilience. Not because standards are low, but because learning is treated as iterative, not performative.
That distinction matters in an AI world.
Because when learning is no longer constrained by access to information, what matters most is the learner’s relationship with uncertainty, effort, and self-worth.
Waldorf education, by contrast, resists acceleration altogether. By emphasising rhythm, creativity, imagination, and emotional development, it prioritises coherence before efficiency. The focus isn’t on maximising output early, but on developing a human who can meet complexity without fragmentation.
Different approaches.
Shared insight.
They treat the inner operating system as foundational, not incidental.
4. Education in an Age of Mirrors
AI doesn’t introduce new values into education.
It reveals the ones already there.
If students have been taught that worth equals output, AI will magnify pressure.
If they’ve been taught that mistakes equal failure, AI will heighten fear.
If they’ve been taught to outsource thinking, AI will happily oblige and deepen dependence.
So perhaps the real question is no longer:
“How do we prepare students for the jobs of the future?”
But:
What inner operating system will they bring to whatever tools they inherit?
5. What Might Conscious Education Include?
Not as a new subject to test.
Not as a curriculum to overhaul.
But as a thread running through learning itself.
Imagine a classroom where:
Students are taught to notice when they’re dysregulated before they’re assessed
Disagreement is explored through values, not just opinions
Uncertainty is treated as a skill, not a weakness
Reflection is as normal as revision
Some schools already do this quietly.
A brief morning check-in.
A pause before problem-solving.
Language for naming internal state.
This isn’t therapy.
It’s literacy.
Because if a student can’t regulate themselves, they can’t think clearly.
And if they can’t think clearly, no tool, no matter how powerful, will help.

If I were designing a school today, what would I build first: the curriculum, or the capacity to engage with it?
